When the smart meter roll-out grinds to a halt

-

SIR – Once we have left the European Union, we will presumably no longer be bound by the Third Energy Package, and will therefore be able to throw our smart meters away.

I wonder if they can be recycled – and, if so, into what? Rick Emerson

SIR – I have an old Warmwise electricity meter, which remains clever enough to measure usage for three tariffs – daytime use, a lower rate for off-peak evening and weekend use, and an even lower rate for night use. I adjust my usage accordingly.

My supplier, EDF, has now, after some evasive tactics, given me the details of a price change for my tariffs, increasing the off-peak evening and weekend rate to be the same as the peak rate, which makes it pointless to delay some of my daytime usage until the off-peak evening and weekend tariff periods.

This suggests that EDF is more interested in profiteering than cutting peak daytime demand and rewarding consumers’ efforts to reduce their peak and total energy usage in response to the Government’s calls. Price comparison sites do not quote for my meter. Brian Newton

SIR – One further problem with the beleaguered roll-out of smart meters concerns their fitting in flats and apartments.

Our three-storey block has the meters in the basement and their signal seems unable to penetrate the layers of concrete to reach the residents’ units. Some suppliers have tried to fit them elsewhere, but so far without success. I dread to imagine how many other properties have experienced this. Clive Hill
