Egypt’s Sisi elected to be African Union chairman
Abdel Fattah el-sisi, the President of Egypt, has been elected chairman of the African Union at the continental body’s summit in Ethiopia.
Mr Sisi, a former general, said he would focus on security and vowed to “uproot terrorism and eradicate it”.
But Amnesty International warned of the consequences of his election for Africa, saying he had demonstrated “a shocking contempt” for human rights since taking power in Egypt in 2014.
