Returning from Isil

-

SIR – During yesterday’s Victoria Derbyshire television show, Ben Wallace, the security minister, discussed what might happen “if ” Shamima Begum returns to Britain – giving the impression that she may do so.

Surely this is the wrong message to send to those who have left Britain to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Ms Begum has stated that she has no regrets and is only interested in giving birth to her child in Britain, where it will be cared for by the state. She would bring nothing to this country except a cost.

SIR – Shamima Begum is quoted as saying that seeing her first severed head in a bin “didn’t faze me at all” because it had belonged to “an enemy of Islam”.

Does she feel that she has the right to return to Britain while expressing such extreme views? If the authorities allow her back “to have her baby”, I and most other law-abiding citizens will know for certain that we really have lost the plot.

Maurice Hastings Northam, Devon

SIR – Shamina Begum says that she is not the same “silly schoolgirl” who ran away in 2015.

Indeed she isn’t. She is the wife of a criminal whose organisation murdered thousands of innocent people in the most horrible way – beheading – including British citizens.

By colluding with such an organisation she has, by default, renounced her British citizenship.
