Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★

 Taika Waititi directs this New Zealand manhunt, involving Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), a chubby juvenile delinquent from the city, and his new foster father, Uncle Hec, a grizzled outdoorsman played with a lot of tough love by Sam Neill. (This guy casts actors who can charm you silly.) Throwaway moments sing all the time here, even if the whole thing is a darn sight harder to swallow.

Shampoo (1975) TALKING PICTURES TV, 10.00PM ★★★★

 This clever satirical comedy sees Warren Beatty play a hairdresser who’s juggling various women (Goldie Hawn, Lee Grant, Julie Christie and Carrie Fisher) and aspiring all the while to open his own salon. But his world begins to unravel as he realises that three of his women are related to the very same man who’s supposed to be giving him a loan. Beatty co-writes, and Hal Ashby directs tidily.

Boy (2010) FILM4, 11.05PM ★★★

 Second on Film4’s Taika Waititi bill tonight is a comedy that kick-started his reputation for being a smart, tender and funny talent (he went on to direct Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok). Set in 1984, it follows Boy (James Rolleston), an 11-year-old dreamer who worships his criminal father (Waititi himself) and also imagines that he’s a close relation of his other hero, Michael Jackson. Expect to shed more than a few tears.
