Goin’ South (1978) 5SPIKE, 2.50PM ★★★★

 Jack Nicholson, always compelling, directs and stars in this light-hearted Western. To the grievance of the town’s deputy sheriff (Christopher Lloyd), local thief Henry Lloyd Moon escapes the hangman’s noose when rancher Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen) agrees to marriage. Tate puts her acquisition straight to work digging for gold, but Moon’s old gang have their own eyes on the prize…

Hancock (2008) COMEDY CENTRAL, 9.00PM ★★★

 This comedy stars Will Smith as a slobbish superhero whose actions cause so much damage that he’s resented by the public. But the story becomes silly with PR man Jason Bateman and his wife (Charlize Theron), who isn’t all she seems. Nevertheless, the anything-goes plot has one quality that your average superhero flick never does: you haven’t a clue where it’s going.

Filmworker (2017) FILM4, 11.15PM ★★★★

 Leon Vitali played Lord Bullingdon in Stanley Kubrick’s magisterial Barry Lyndon. Fascinated by the director’s working methods, he asked to stay on after the end of filming, and to watch how Kubrick edited; it was the beginning of a 20-year collaboration. In Tony Zierra’s meticulous and quite moving documentary, Vitali (and some other Kubrick associates) tell us what it was like to be with Kubrick on set.
