Key votes What are the choices for MPS?
MPS will today attempt to seize control of Brexit with a series of “indicative” votes on alternative options for an EU withdrawal. They can vote for more than one option. They are:
Second referendum
Two rival motions have been tabled that would give the public a “confirmatory vote” before Britain leaves the EU. One has been tabled by Dame Margaret Beckett, the Labour MP, and another by Peter Kyle, another Labour backbencher.
Common Market 2.0
Nick Boles, the Tory MP, has tabled a motion that would see Britain stay in the single market and a customs union. George Eustice, another Tory MP, has tabled a similar motion that removes the commitment to a customs union.
Article 50 revocation
Joanna Cherry, an SNP MP, has tabled a motion that will force the Government to revoke Article 50 if a deal has not been agreed. Under the amendment if a deal is not reached by the day before Brexit, MPS will be given a vote on leaving without a deal. If it is defeated, the Article 50 revocation will begin.
Customs union
Gareth Snell, a Labour MP, has tabled a motion which seeks to ensure that the Government will be in a Customs Union with the EU after Brexit.
No deal
John Baron, a Tory MP, has tabled a motion stating the UK will leave the EU on April 12 without a deal.
Malthouse compromise
A “plan B” which replaces the Irish backstop with “alternative arrangements”.
Labour’s plan
It is calling for a permanent customs union, close alignment with the single market, EU rights and participation in funding projects.
