Elizabeth Hurley looks fabulous – so we don’t have to

-

Well, we know spring is finally here, and it wasn’t just a false alarm. All the telltale signs are there. The daffs are nodding their yellow trumpets of loveliness. The Archers has got the baa-ahaa lambing soundtrack on full blast. It’s too hot to wear a coat and too cold not to wear one. But the season really would not be under way without Elizabeth Hurley bustin’ out all over. For 2019, Liz is modelling that notorious Versace gown she wore to the 1994 Four Weddings and a Funeral premiere, inset, in a shoot for Harper’s Bazaar.

A quarter of a century has passed since the fresh-faced young Liz made the flashbulbs

– and every pair of straight male eyes – pop with her appearance in a dress that was three parts punk safety pins to seven parts chutzpah. Never mind the Sex Pistols, here’s Hugh Grant’s girlfriend! Rarely has a dress stolen the show so completely. A multitude of sins was not covered.

Liz is now 53 and, thanks to a regime that makes those of us who dabble in the 5:2 feel like pathetic amateurs, she can still wriggle into the original, iconic garment. However, the Niagara Falls of cleavage was not considered age-appropriate, so an elegant new version of the frock was designed to offer a little more support.

I used to find her irritating. She managed to parlay a skimpy frock into a career. She was not a girl’s girl. She was the girl whose name your boyfriend said in bed. There was the way she referred to regular women as “civilians”. The way she once confessed to eating six raisins as “a treat”, and she wasn’t joking.

Now, I think respect where respect is due. If it takes military discipline to look that fabulous at 53, then Liz Hurley is the SAS of beauty.

Once you stop hating her, it’s actually quite relaxing. Liz does it so we don’t have to!

As long as she looks like that, we will never be old. Spring simply wouldn’t be the same without her.
