Waterworld (1995) 5SPIKE, 9.00PM ★★★

 This post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, starring Kevin Costner, about a futuristic Earth covered in water after the ice caps have melted and populated by warring gangs, is often ridiculed as the most expensive flop of all time (it cost $175million, for an initial US return of just $88million). In truth, it’s not as bad as its reputation suggests – there are some cracking action scenes, and it’s visually strong.

Highlander (1986) TCM, 9.00PM ★★★

 Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert star in this cult swordswinging adventure; in the pantheon of ludicrous Eighties action movies, it’s a cut above. It begins in the 16th century where an immortal Scottish clansman (Lambert) is being trained by another immortal (Connery) for a fight to take place centuries later. The only way a warrior can lose the battle is to lose their head, literally.

Starsky & Hutch (2004) ITV4, 12.10AM ★★★

 Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller team up once more to play the title roles in this tongue-in-cheek action comedy based on the Seventies TV police show. It’s 1975 and, with the help of underworld boss Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg), the two streetwise cops attempt to bust the drugs ring of kingpin Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn). It’s neither deep nor smart entertainment, but worth a handful of belly laughs.
