Senior doctors accused of ‘culture of sexism’
Senior British Medical Association members sent unsolicited naked pictures and joked about women’s bra sizes amid a culture of “institutional sexism”, female doctors have claimed. In an online article, two women from the BMA’S GP committee hit out at its “misogynistic behaviour”, claiming an outdated culture had forced out many women doctors who should have progressed. They said harassment, sexism and discriminatory behaviour needed to be stamped out.
A FOREIGN doctor with no birth certificate is being investigated for manslaughter after he allegedly pierced a patient’s heart.
Dr Isyaka Mamman, who could be as old as 82, was questioned last month over allegations of gross negligence after Shahida Varven collapsed while giving a sample of her bone marrow.
The elderly doctor, originally from Nigeria, planned to take a sample from Mrs Varven’s hip, but the procedure was unsuccessful, so he took one from her sternum instead.
Mrs Varven, 48, collapsed a short time later, and despite temporarily regaining consciousness, died soon afterwards on Sept 3 last year.
NHS investigators carried out an internal inquiry before passing the matter onto police and Dr Mamman was suspended on Nov 23.
When officers searched his home in Royton, near Oldham, they found various prescription medication in different names, as well as legal documents showing different dates of birth.
Dr Mamman was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence and prescription fraud on March 15. He denies wrongdoing, is currently on bail and has not been charged.
The investigation emerged when he went to Thameside magistrates’ court to request a change in bail conditions.
