Vogue’s former fashion director answers your style questions

Q At what age did you discover fashion? A Very early on, as not only was my mother a snappy dresser but she was incredibly good at sewing and made most of her clothes and mine. We used to get our ideas from Kids In Gear along the King’s Road and Harrods – both of which were way out of our price bracket – along with measurements, as my mother always kept a tape measure in her handbag. Q What are your go-to brands? A I always look at Prada and Commes des Garçons as the pieces never date – they’re my investments. I’ve collected beautiful things from Hussein Chalayan, Christopher Kane and Roksanda that I wear and rewear. I feel very fortunate that we have our brand Colville now: with my partners Molly and Kristin, when we are pining for something, we design it! Q Where do you shop on the high street? A I go to Arket for trousers, knits and underwear from & Other Stories, printed dresses from Zara, shoes from Mango, and I love H&M homeware. Q Is there anything that you wear now that you wouldn’t have worn when you were younger? A Pretty much everything! I dress the age that’s in my head and not on my passport, but that’s not in my teens or 20s. Also, I looked crazy when I was younger and I don’t think I do now… well, not as much. Q What’s your beauty routine? A My routine is wonderful Vaishaly (vaishaly. com) once a month – she’s incredible for not only the routine (spots, etc) but also for craniosacral therapy, so you come out with very calm skin and head space – and Nicola Clarke (nicolaclarkeatjohnfreida. com) for my hair colour. They push me a bit: I’ve completely lost track of my original colour and it’s almost white blond now – I wouldn’t have thought of that. Q Which beauty products are always in your bathroom cabinet? A I always have a face oil on the go, Plant Me Botanics for night (plantmebotanics.com) and Dr Jackson for day (drjackson.co.uk), and a Sisley product for under the eyes. I’m really partial to fake tan; my favourite is Decléor’s Aroma Sun Expert selftanning milk (£24, amazon.co.uk), as it’s subtle and great for taking off those “winter legs”. The other quite odd things that I’ve used over the years are a Hollywood secret called Frownies: little triangles of glued paper that you stick between your eyes while you sleep to stop you frowning! They work: you wake up not looking so cross.
