Rail passengers face disruption and delays over Easter holiday

- By Jamie Johnson

HUNDREDS of thousands of passengers face delays and disruption as 13,800 engineers are scheduled to work “round the clock” as part of Network Rail’s £100million upgrade over the bank holidays.

London’s Euston station will be most heavily affected, as it closes over Easter and the early May bank holiday weekend with no trains in or out.

This will have a major impact on journeys including alternative routes, longer travel times and busier trains than normal, says Network Rail.

The improvements at Euston are in preparation for HS2, Britain’s controversial new high-speed railway and includes work to clear additional concourse space to help customers move more freely around the station.

Elsewhere on the West Coast main line, further sections of track will be completely replaced over both bank holidays, as well as upgrades to overhead lines, signals and points meaning services around Preston and Glasgow will also be severely affected.

The line between Birmingham International and Coventry will be closed at Easter, while services to and from St Pancras International will be amended.

Gatwick Express services will not run on Good Friday and Easter Sunday and trains between Manchester and Liverpool Lime Street will terminate at Hunt’s Cross on Easter Sunday, with buses completing the journey.

There will also be significant electrification work between Cardiff Central station and Severn Tunnel junction from April 19-22.
