SIR – I am a member of an endangered species: a Conservative councillor standing for re-election on May 2.

I am in danger of extinction despite being part of a Conservative-led council for the last 12 years. During that time we have had one of the lowest increases in council tax in the country. We have invested in the best rural superfast broadband infrastructure in the UK, surpassing the performance of many metropolitan areas. We have kept our weekly bin collections and have some of the best maintained rural roads in England.

The asteroid threatening to wipe us out is Brexit. Our only hope for survival will be the recognition by the voters that local issues have a more direct impact on their lives and wallets than Brexit or anything an incompetent Prime Minister and Parliament can mismanage. Councillor Alan Law

SIR – I have voted Conservative all my life and have never sent a complaining letter to a newspaper. As long as Theresa May is in charge of the Tory party I will never vote Conservative.

She has botched one election and a Brexit process through a lack of ambition and a hopelessly naive negotiating strategy. Rob Young

SIR – I am more than a little baffled that angry Tory voters want to punish pro-brexit MPS such as Iain Duncansmith in an election, thus increasing the odds on the now apparently pro-remain Labour Party being elected, which would no doubt do its best to reverse Brexit.

Abstain at your peril. Jonathan Wright

SIR – Having been a member of the Conservative party for many years I find myself toying, as many members probably are, with the Brexit Party, at least until Brexit happens (and it must), and certainly for the European elections, should they happen. The only way I would reconsider is for the calamitous Mrs May to resign within weeks and for us to be given the chance to vote for a true Conservative PM, which, of the current motley crew, can only be Boris Johnson.

Mrs May is doing the country and the party harm by refusing to budge. Margaret Thatcher she is not. Mark Warren

London W6

SIR – People keep saying that Mrs May is doing a terrible job. But if her objective is to reduce the Conservatives’ popular support to about 10 per cent of the electorate then she is doing an amazing job. John Fox

SIR – I’m not sure if the voters in Ukraine have shown us how to move forward politically or are following our recent politico-comedic example. Keith Mungham
