It may be rude to ask, but we must know when Theresa May will go

- Colin Drury

SIR – He might have been impolite, but I salute Stuart Davies (Comment, May 10) for his courage in heckling Theresa May at the Welsh Conservatives’ recent conference in Llangollen.

What was jaw-dropping for me were the other incidents at that meeting: the Prime Minster’s reaction to the welcoming polite applause (a fauxmodest gesture, “No, no, you mustn’t applaud me just because I deserve it”), followed by a standing ovation at the end. In the name of sanity, what for?

Dinas Powys, Glamorgan

SIR – Mrs May says Brexit is not about her, and thus she excuses her continued occupation of No 10. This is the woman who has micromanaged Brexit from the beginning, refusing to delegate, refusing to communicate or to listen, with seemingly impenetrable skin and absolute incomprehension of the way she is increasingly seen by the general public.

She has made it all about her for the past three years. I joined the Conservative Party last July, when Mrs May came up with her appalling Chequers plan, in order to be able to vote for another leader.

I shall be very cross if I have to stump up another year’s membership for my chance to do so. E J Barraclough

SIR – Amber Rudd thinks that Theresa May can make a comeback. How? She has no credibility left and even fewer ideas.

If this is an indication of senior Tory thinking then they deserve all that is coming to them.

Tory councillors were decimated last week, and worse will follow in the European elections. Mrs May must go now and be replaced by someone with vision. Charles Penfold

Ulverston, Cumbria

SIR – Despite being brought up in the Labour heartland of Jarrow, I have voted Conservative for as long as I can remember. After recent events and the monumental failure of Theresa May to carry out Brexit, I made a decision.

On Tuesday I posted a cheque for £25 to the London office of the Brexit Party to become a member. I suspect I will not be alone.

SIR – I am a lifetime member of the Conservative Party and have just received the party’s EU election leaflet.

The main thrust is that we shall take back control of our laws and borders.

Why tell blatant untruths? Peter Mitchell

SIR – The present attempt at governmental Brexit democracy reminds me of the Wildean remark: “Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people.” RL Smith
