Week-old Archie all set at Windsor to meet the Cambridges for first time

- By Victoria Ward

THE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to visit Windsor today to meet their nephew for the first time, a week after his birth.

It comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex paid a poignant tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales yesterday, by honouring mothers “lost but forever remembered” on international Mother’s Day.

The message was accompanied by a photograph of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-windsor’s feet cradled in his mother’s hand against a backdrop of forget-me-nots, one of the late princess’s favourite flowers.

Archie has already met the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, while early visitors are known to include Lady Jane Fellowes, Diana’s sister.

His grandmother, Doria Ragland, is also on hand to help out at Frogmore Cottage. But neither the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall nor the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have yet visited.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, who have been on tour in Germany, are said to be planning a visit to Windsor within the next few days. A source said the Cambridges were hoping to visit today or tomorrow, but both have engagements tomorrow: the Duchess is due to visit a D-day exhibition at Bletchley Park and the Duke will speak at a United for Wildlife event.

Phil Dampier, the veteran royal reporter and author said: “It seems a bit strange that William and Kate have not yet been to see Archie. I’m sure for many, it will feed into the recent narrative that Harry and William have grown apart.

Of course, it was Harry and Meghan’s decision to move away from Kensington Palace, which does make the logistics a bit more difficult.”

The glimpse of Archie was accompanied by a touching message posted on the Sussexes’ Instagram page: “Paying tribute to all mothers today – past, present, mothers-to-be, and those lost but forever remembered. We honour and celebrate each and every one of you.

“Today is Mother’s Day in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Japan, and … across Europe. This is the first Mother’s Day for the Duchess of Sussex.”

It went on to quote from the poem Lands by Nayyirah Waheed: “my mother was my first country; the first place i ever lived.”

The Duchess was believed to have written the post, as it featured the American spelling of “honor”.

The Duke referenced the loss of his mother when discussing his son’s birth in The Hague last week, as he launched a countdown to the Invictus Games.
