Big-picture PM

-

SIR – Critics of Boris Johnson claim that he is not a “details” person.

He does not need to be. A prime minister’s focus should be on the bigger picture, leaving details to trusted, competent advisers and civil servants. That is why Theresa May was such a failure: she insisted on micro-managing everything. Sandy Pratt

SIR – A vote for Jeremy Hunt, with Amber Rudd promised a top job, would get us straight back to square one: two Remainers in charge. We will never get out of the EU. Susan Vosser

SIR – I would support Sajid Javid for leader, as I think he is the most sensible of all the candidates.

I therefore hope for his sake that he loses the race for this unenviable post. The next prime minister will be on a hiding to nothing, and Mr Javid should wait before taking up the reins, which will be dropped sooner or later. Tony Rice-oxley

SIR – Many students of Michael Gove’s generation may have tried illegal drugs as part of growing up, but Mr Gove was well past his student days when he did so (Letters, June 11).

The main problem is not that he took drugs, but that he appears to be a hypocrite, having criticised drug users while taking drugs himself. And there are other factors that call his judgment into question: he supported Boris Johnson’s previous leadership bid, then changed his mind. He also supported Brexit, but then supported Mrs May’s proposed deal. John Roberts
