Public pays to keep watch on Wilde’s jail

-

 Taxpayers have forked out £1.6million on electricity, gas and security for a disused prison famed for once holding Oscar Wilde.

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) continues to pay to power, heat and guard HMP Reading, despite it closing down six years ago, according to figures obtained by the BBC.

Up to £250,000 has been spent per year on building maintenance and, over the past three years, the ministry has spent nearly £700,000 on security costs.

An MOJ spokesman said the building must be heated as it is Grade II listed and electricity must be on for security purposes.

Oscar Wilde was jailed in 1895 and spent two years in the prison.
