‘Mystery’ death of student who took diet pills before holiday

-

A STUDENT was found dead in her room after going on an extreme diet to lose weight before she went on holiday.

Lindsey Bone, 20, was found in her bedroom in Coombe Road, Brighton, by flatmates on April 5. She had died the night before.

The University of Sussex criminology student had been fasting and taking a weight loss supplement.

At an inquest last Thursday, a coroner could not find a reason for her death and said it was a “mystery”.

Veronica Hamilton-deeley, the Brighton and Hove coroner, heard Ms Bone had been following a strict diet plan including fasting and taking regular supplement tablets of apple cider vinegar, which is widely advertised as a “natural appetite suppressant” and “weight-loss supplement”.

The coroner was told by Ms Bone’s fiancé that she had been anxious about going on holiday and was determined to lose weight.

Claire Rogers, from the coroner’s office, discovered a food diary in the student’s room containing rules such as “stay at the library and don’t eat” and “take your f------ apple cider vinegar”.

Ms Bone was prescribed antidepressants and anxiety medication in 2018 after the death of her father.

Recording an open verdict, Miss Hamilton-deeley said the case was a “mystery”, adding: “The only two conclusions would be natural causes or misadventure if we found that for some reason any supplements she was taking had a reaction with any of her medication. But that seems unlikely.”

Mandy Bone, Lindsey’s mother, said she wanted to warn others, particularly young girls, about extreme dieting.

She said: “Please be careful.”
