The Grenfell report requires immediate action

-

sir – Dany Cotton, the Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, is clearly out of her depth, as her evidence to the Grenfell Inquiry and reaction to the criticisms contained in its report show.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, should tell her to go now, so that work on finding and appointing a new commissioner can start straightaway. Peter Forrest

Former Board Member, London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority, London N6

sir – Dany Cotton is refusing to resign because she “wants to see through the changes” recommended in Sir Martin Moore-bick’s report.

Her apparent conviction that she is the right person to address these problems simply magnifies the immense sense of injustice and hurt caused by her evidence to the inquiry.

Changing the culture of any organisation requires time, never mind having to address the “serious shortcomings” and “systemic failures” cited in the report. If Ms Cotton believes she can make the changes needed in the six months before she takes early retirement, she is being naive as well as arrogant.

Have we lost completely the concept of someone being willing to fall on their sword if the tide of public opinion is overwhelmingly against them? John Bassett

sir – I agree with Stella Currie (Letters, October 30).

In the Grenfell Tower tragedy the brave firefighters and their superior officers were faced with a completely unprecedented event and, as always, they did their best to react to it.

It is one thing to be faced with such a horrific situation and act in real time; it is quite another to sit for several months in a comfortable courtroom and dissect those actions.

The criticism of the firefighters is a complete disgrace. Denis Geeson
