WHAT WE LOVED THIS MONTH
Darts, darts, darts
A 25-year-old from Milton Keynes was the unlikeliest of sporting heroes over the Christmas period.
When Fallon Sherrock (below) became the first woman to win a match at the PDC World Championships, she became an overnight sensation. What was even more remarkable was the fact she followed up a historic win by notching up a second victory four days later. All coming off the back of very little sleep and a stack of media appearances in between.
Less than four weeks later, and Bolton’s Lisa Ashton joined Sherrock in the history books by becoming the first woman to win a PDC Tour card. How did the 49-year-old toast her big moment you might wonder? A Chinese takeaway and a cup of tea!
Always look on the bright side
When you have been walloped out of sight by a former Australian Open tennis champion, sometimes you have to see the funny side of things.
American Kristie Ahn did just that after crashing out of the opening major in Melbourne to Caroline Wozniacki this week.
“Got asked some tough questions in the presser today,” the 27-year-old tweeted with a photo of an empty press room.
Ahn then proceeded to open the floor to anyone on social keen to find out more about her. Fans duly took up the baton, asking some very tongue-in-cheek questions, to which Ahn duly responded in jest.
Egg-freezing included in new basketball deal
Money towards adoption, surrogacy, egg-freezing and fertility-treatment costs are just a few of the benefits of a landmark deal agreed by the Women’s National Basketball Association and the players’ union.
Players in the United States, who have previously chosen to supplement their wages by playing overseas, can cut back on their “double-shift” lifestyle now with salaries due to drastically increase over the course of the eight-year deal. Finally, an organisation is putting its money where its mouth is.
