Universities quibble about exam grades

-

sir – I find it hypocritical of universities to quibble about difficulties dealing with predicted grades, when 25 per cent of their offers last year were unconditional.

sir – We are told that “essential” workers’ children can go to school. But what about the manufacturing sector that funds the public sector? If these businesses stop working (and paying tax) where does the money come from to fund their wages and things like hospitals? Alastair Muir

sir – Much has been made of schools closing for the duration, but preschools are also affected.

These pre-schools are charities, rather than beneficiaries of state largesse, and as such will suffer greatly if the Government does not step in to ensure their survival. My wife is the manager of an Ofsted “outstanding” pre-school and fears that if it closed it would never reopen. Luke Murley

sir – As grandparents restricted from regular care of our pre-school grandchildren, we have taken up regular letter-writing, enclosing suitable pictures cut from The Daily Telegraph and other publications. Donkeys are their favourite.

Letters should be simply worded, in large (lower case) script. Try composing a story using words spelled as they sound. The children will begin to recognise their names and yours and some repeated words. The letter will probably be re-read frequently.

By sending a stamped, addressed envelope, you might even receive a reply, after they have walked, with an adult, to a post box. Buy your stamps before Monday’s price increase. Rosemary Yarker
