Duffy ‘drugged, put on a plane and raped’
POP singer Duffy has revealed she was drugged during a birthday meal and then flown abroad in a four-week rape ordeal.
The Welsh singer, whose full name is Aimee Duffy, has shared details of her harrowing experience in a lengthy online post in order to be freed from the burden of a traumatic secret.
The singer, 35, rose to international fame with singles including Mercy, but appeared to vanish from public life after her breakthrough success, and hopes her painful revelations will answer questions about her long absence from the limelight.
Duffy first detailed her ordeal in February, writing on her Instagram account that she had suffered sexual assault.
On the same platform the singer has now said police are aware of what she endured, and she has given a further account of her experience.
She wrote online that: “It was my birthday, I was drugged at a restaurant, I was drugged then for four weeks and travelled to a foreign country. I can’t remember getting on the plane and came round in the back of a travelling vehicle.
“I was put into a hotel room and the perpetrator returned and raped me.”
The singer said she returned from that country with the unnamed person, fearing what she said were “veiled confessions of wanting to kill me”.
Duffy recalls her ordeal coming to an end with her fleeing and being found by an acquaintance.
This began, she said, a lasting battle with trauma and fear which left her at a “high risk of suicide”.
She revealed she had been left romantically isolated, and more distant from her family.
She also suggested that this was the cause of her retreat from the public eye. While initially fearing contact with the police, she has on two occasions put the ordeal on the record and told officers the distressing details.
On one occasion, the singer wrote, because someone was threatening to tell her private story.
The singer said her recovery with the help of a therapist took time, and she has endured a decade of loneliness, but told fans: “I am now free”.
