THE GOOD NEWS WINTER OFFERS HOPE THIS SUMMER

-

Every day in this column, The Daily Telegraph will seek out and report snippets of comfort as the world fights coronavirus

♦ A llama called Winter may hold a key to unlocking a treatment for Covid-19, say US and Belgian scientists who have identified a particle that appears to block coronavirus.

Llama antibodies are easier for scientists to work with and Winter was given a “safe” version of Sars and Mers, which the scientists are analysing to see how it may block the virus.

♦ Tyrese Dibb, 15, a student from Birmingham, has created a series of free videos to teach British Sign Language. Calling on more people to learn to sign, Tyrese, who is deaf and partially sighted, said: “It will help the deaf community feel part of wider society. The lessons are free and they cover my favourite subjects, including food and holidays.”

♦ Italy’s prime minister has said people might be able to go on holiday this summer, and the German tourism commissioner has said that citizens could take foreign breaks “in the next four to eight weeks” if the outbreak remains under control.

♦ Life in South Korea was mostly back to normal yesterday, with workers returning to offices while museums and libraries reopened.

Meanwhile in Thailand, pet groomers reopened for the first time since January.

♦ A family in east London has organised a team of 3,000 volunteers to make more than 11,000 scrubs for NHS hospitals in Suffolk, Essex and London. The Bates family has raised nearly £50,000 for more fabric to continue with their work. ♦ Ministers have earmarked funds for post-covid-19 economic recovery to hand to firms committed to cutting carbon emissions. Government advisers said that those searching for jobs should be trained for work in “green” industries such as home insulation and tree planting.
