Amazon workers told to delete Tiktok app

AMAZON told some staff to delete Tiktok from their work phones because of “security risks”, as concern grows about the Chinese viral video app.

In an internal memo, Amazon told workers yesterday to remove Tiktok from any device with access to company email before the end of the day.

Following employee backlash on social media, Amazon later claimed that the email had been sent “in error” and that the app was not prohibited.

Tiktok is under investigation in both the UK and the US, having been barred from India last month. Officials claim its Chinese ownership gives Beijing free access to users’ data.

Tiktok has consistently claimed it has never given data to the Chinese state and would not do so. It said yesterday: “User security is of the utmost importance – we are fully committed to respecting the privacy of our users.

“While Amazon did not communicate to us before sending their email, and we still do not understand their concerns, we welcome a dialogue so we can address any issues they may have.”

Meanwhile, Oliver Dowden, the Culture Secretary, is poised to announce a 2025 deadline to strip China’s Huawei from the UK’S 5G network, The Daily Telegraph understands.
