FIVE ‘BAGNUMS’ TO TRY
Le Grappin Maçon-villages, France 1.5l, £29, gnarlyvines. co.uk
A vivacious vin de soif (meaning wine of thirst, or easydrinking quaffer) from a bespoke bag in a box specialist based out of an old winery in Beaune. A brisk yet elegant Macon Burgundy, fresh and full of stone fruit, honeydew melon and peach aromas.
Domaine Jean-marc Astruc Fitou 2019, France
2.25l, £36.20, bibwine.co.uk As autumnal thoughts of comforting Sunday roasts return, reach for this fabulous Fitou from Katie Jones, a British winemaker who makes adventurously alternative wines from small-batch vineyards in south-west France. This is a deep ruby, wild and herby syrah-driven red that locals lap up with the region’s wild boar – but it’s just as excellent with slowroasted, rosemaryinfused lamb.
Maree d’ione fiano IGP Puglia Organic, Italy 2.25l, £20.79, waitrosecellar. com
Don’t be hoodwinked by the tin-ofemulsionappearance of this 100 per cent recyclable cardboard tube. It contains an elegant, organic, waxy Italian white, hewn with honey and light hazelnutty tones that would be perfect with garlic-butter prawns.
Vinnaturo Tank #10, Airen/ Macabeo, Dionisio de Nova, Spain 1.5l, £32.50, morewine. co.uk Regarded by some as the most quixotic and cultured expression of winemaking, yet dismissed as too renegade by others, low intervention, natural orange wine lends itself perfectly to pouches. In this version you’ll find nutty, sherry-like notes with dried apricots and tart, tonguetwisting tannins – fantastic at fighting the flames of spicy food.
Three Choirs Bacchus ‘Archa’ 2019, England
2.25l, £35.20, bibwine. co.uk
Fresh, floral and flinty, ideal as an aperitif, this Gloucestershiregrown Bacchus is brimming with breezy notes of elderflower, freshly cut grass and greengage. Wonderful with whitebait.
