Watson takes job advising big bookmakers
TOM WATSON, an outspoken critic of the gambling industry, has taken on a new role advising Paddy Power and Betfair on problem gamblers.
The former Labour deputy leader, who left the party in a shock resignation last November, has joined Flutter Entertainment, the world’s largest online betting company, to provide advice on problem gambling.
According to the Financial Times, Mr Watson will be paid a retainer, understood to be less than £100,000, to perform the role. When Mr Watson resigned Jeremy Corbyn, then leader of the party, said he knew he would “continue to take on the vested interests of the Murdoch empire, big sugar companies and the gambling industry”.
Mr Watson said he had “a longstanding interest in this sector and have consistently called for action to protect those who may be potentially vulnerable to harm”.
“In taking on this role in Flutter, I intend to get under the bonnet of the business, and the industry more widely, to understand how best to further develop and implement industryleading responsible gambling policies,” he said.
“I strongly believe that working collaboratively with Flutter in this way will allow me to continue to drive positive change.”
The move comes ahead of a government review of gambling law, with much of the legislation expected to crack down on problem gambling.
Mr Watson, who is also chairman of UK Music, will advise the company on its shops, marketing, customer service and anti-money laundering procedures.
