Elton John resolves Rocketman divorce deal discord with ex-wife

- By Dominic Penna

SIR ELTON JOHN has resolved a legal row with his ex-wife, who sued him after claiming the musician’s Rocketman biopic breached their divorce agreement.

Renate Blauel, 67, launched legal action in July against the singer-songwriter, 73, for alleged “repeated and flagrant” breaches of an agreement the couple reached when they separated in 1988.

The agreement, signed at the end of their four-year marriage, included a clause that stopped Sir Elton or Ms Blauel from discussing their marriage or the reasons for their separation. Ms Blauel claimed that scenes in the 2019 biopic, of which Sir Elton was an executive producer, had led to renewed public interest in her.

She further alleged that her ex-husband breached the agreement by maki ng numerous mentions of their relationship in Me, his autobiography, which was also released last year. Ms Blauel said she had sought to live a quiet life and have her privacy respected.

A spokesman for Sir Elton said: “The parties are happy to announce that they have resolved this case, in a way that acknowledges Renate’s need for privacy. For her part, Renate acknowledges that Elton has acted in a dignified and respectful way towards her in the last 30 years and has been always happy to help her. They will not be discussing each other, or their marriage, in future and will be making no further comment about the case.”

Ms Blauel claimed in court documents released in August that Sir Elton should have known she was vulnerable to mental health i ssues after she attempted to end her life during their honeymoon, but Sir Elton denied knowing that she was prone to psychological harm.

Sir Elton and Ms Blauel, who was born in Germany, met each other in 1983 and were subsequently married during a ceremony held the following year in Australia.
