HOW TO GET THAT FESTIVE FEELING

- Lisa Williams

While Birmingham’s German Market and Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland have been given a sabbatical, the good news is that Christmas is not cancelled completely. Make a date for one of the following...

A light show: If lockdown lifts, Christmas at Kew is still going ahead (kew.org), running into January. There are similar events across some National Trust properties (nationaltrust.org.uk).

Virtual carols: Come all ye faithful to the digital equivalent. Homelessness charity Shelter (england. shelter.org.uk/) is hosting the UK’S biggest virtual carol concert from St-martin-in-the-fields, featuring Julie Walters and Stephen Fry (Dec 3), St Paul’s Knightsbridge (stpaulsknightsbridge. org) is live-streaming its Foundation Carol Service (Dec 1), and The Eve Appeal charity (eveappeal. org.uk/) takes its annual Festival of Carols, with readings by Helen Lederer and Nigel Havers, online (Dec 10). Light your own candles and sing like no one’s watching.

Foodie deliveries: Most hotels and restaurants are taking advance bookings for December. For outdoor treats, Pergola Paddington (pergola paddington.com) is taking reservations for its “Miracle on Kingdom Street” Christmas experience. Or you can order mince pies and stollen from Bettys of Harrogate (www.bettys. co.uk). While Soho Hotel (firmdalehotels.com) is offering festive afternoon tea deliveries on Saturdays from November 28.

Drive-in films: Revert to a car-based movie experience. The Luna Drive In (lunadrivein cinema.com) is setting up at Birmingham’s NEC, Small Town Big Screen (smalltownbigscreen.com) is popping up in three sites in Lancashire, while @Thedrivein (atthedrive.in/) is taking bookings for screenings in London and Manchester.
