But there are plenty in our number for whom something a little more understate­d will appeal.

How to wear it:

Just because you’re eschewing the “fun” element doesn’t mean you can’t still have a little, well, fun. Opt for knits with talking-point details – there are bows, collars and offbeat buttons galore to explore this year. Next’s pointed collar knit comes in a festive shade of claret. Veer away from wearing with jeans all the time and try something unexpected… leather joggers, cords in a warm, wintry tone or a swooshy printed skirt would all be brilliant.

How to find it: With knitwear aplenty on the high street, you’re spoilt for choice, but make “jumpers are for life, not just for Christmas” your mantra. Would you still wear it in January? Or next winter?

Other brands to consider: Madeleine Thompson has a gorgeous selection of knits ranging from sleek polos to splashy graphic prints, Brora’s Fair Isles are lovely, and Hayley Menzies has excellent maximalist options, think lace-trim sleeves or pompom adorned.

Why it works: Hotels in tiers one and two are allowed to reopen, which means we can make a festive escape. Given this will probably be a highlight of your winter, I suggest semaphorin­g that via your clothing – so go glitzy or go home.
