Man charged over Wisconsin car carnage as child is sixth fatality

- By Marcus Parekh

PROSECUTORS have charged a man over the deaths of five people who were run down by an SUV at a Christmas parade in Wisconsin on Sunday.

A sixth victim, a child, has died and more charges are pending, they added.

Darrell Brooks faces a mandatory life sentence if he is convicted of firstdegree intentional homicide over the incident which left 62 people injured in Waukesha, including many children.

Meanwhile, it emerged that a Good Samaritan made a sandwich for the suspect immediately before the man’s arrest outside his house.

Daniel Rider told NBC News that Brooks showed up at his front door claiming he was homeless and waiting for an Uber, just 20 minutes after the carnage. Mr Rider said that he invited the man in, made him a sandwich and let him use his phone. Doorbell camera footage, also obtained by NBC News, captured the moment that a shivering Brooks knocked on the front door.

“I called an Uber and I’m supposed to be waiting for it over here, but I don’t know when it’s coming. Can you call it for me please? I’m homeless,” he can be heard saying.

Mr Rider added that he had no idea what had happened, as he had just returned from a hunting trip and was watching sport on television.

After inviting the 39 year old in, Mr Rider was alarmed to see police start to circle the property.

“All of a sudden, I look outside my street and I see a few cop cars drive by and I’m getting extra nervous,” he told NBC. He then says he asked Brooks to leave. He left, but as police began to arrive, he began “pounding” on the door, saying he had forgotten his ID.

“Then the next thing you know, you see the cops with lights on him saying, ‘hands in the air, hands in the air’.”

Doorbell camera footage captured Brooks saying “whoa, whoa, whoa” before complying with the orders.
