THEIR MAJESTIES’ THANKS.
Of the innumerable congratulatory messages received at Buckingham Palace yesterday, one of the earliest to arrive was a telegram from the Grand Fleet. To a telegram of congratulation despatched on the part of the City of London by the Lord Mayor, the King sent the following reply: The Queen and I desire to express our heartfelt thanks for the kind message of congratulation on the betrothal of our dear daughter which we have received from you in the name of the citizens of London. Princess Mary replied to a similar message: Will you please convey to the citizens of London my grateful thanks for their good wishes. I can assure you, my Lord Mayor, that their message gives me the greatest pleasure on this happy day. Telegrams of congratulation were yesterday sent to his Majesty and to Princess Mary by Lord Provost Hutchison, Edinburgh. The message to the King was as follows: The Corporation and citizens of Edinburgh have received with the greatest gratification the news of the betrothal of her Royal Highness Princess Mary to Viscount Lascelles, and on their behalf I respectfully tender their most loyal and cordial congratulations. The telegram to the Princess was: On behalf of the Corporation and citizens of Edinburgh I tender most cordial felicitations on the occasion of your betrothal to Viscount Lascelles. The whole community unites in this expression of congratulation and good wishes. At the meeting of the National Assembly of the Church of England yesterday afternoon the Archbishop of Canterbury said it had been suggested to him that, without creating a precedent, the circumstances of that day made it desirable on behalf of the Assembly to offer their respectful felicitations to Princess Mary on her betrothal. (Cheers.) The circumstances were peculiar so far as the Assembly was concerned, because they were in the middle of their deliberations, but he thought it would be appropriate if he did something of the kind. (Cheers.)
