World’s fastest road car to go under hammer for £4.3m

- By Matt Oliver

A RARE example of the world’s fastest road car has come up for auction with a price tag of £4.3m.

The used Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ is being sold by Bonhams in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Jan 25.

It is one of only 30 of the “hypercars” made in a limited production run.

Petrolheads revere the car for breaking through the 300mph barrier on the Ehra-lessien racetrack in Germany five years ago. It achieved a record-breaking top speed of 304.77mph.

That was partly achieved through a series of one-off modifications, including changes to the chassis, engine, ride height and interiors.

The car has a 16-cylinder, eight-litre engine with four turbochargers, boasting 1,577 horsepower. A Ford Focus has around 180 horsepower.

Bugatti claims the production versions of the Chiron Super Sport 300+ are capable of breaking 300mph but the company electronically limits the top speed to 273mph – still making it unquestionably one of the fastest road cars in the world.

They were originally sold by the French luxury car maker for around £3m each.

According to Bonhams, the car being auctioned has just 255 miles on the clock, 250 of which were covered by Bugatti when it was testing the vehicle.

Bonhams estimates it will fetch up to $5.5m (£4.3m) after another one of the cars – which had done more than five times as many miles – sold for about £4.2m at an auction run by Sotheby’s.

Production of the Chiron Super Sport 300+ finished in 2022.

The car has a black exterior with orange markings, as well as a black carbon fibre interior and leather seats.

It is equipped with a tracking system that lets Bugatti monitor its location.
