Rescued XL Bully shot dead in Scotland after attacks
AN AMERICAN XL bully-style dog that was shot dead in Scotland after mauling two men and attacking a police officer was rehomed from England, it has emerged.
The animal was described as being dangerously out of control when firearms officers were called to a location in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, at about 5pm on Tuesday. A man was found seriously injured and taken to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Shortly before the attack, another man had been injured by the dog in a neighbouring street. He was taken to Hairmyres Hospital with minor injuries.
The “large bulldog-type dog” was shot dead by police after it tried to attack an officer.
The dog is understood to have been rescued from south of the border two weeks ago after the breed was banned in England and Wales after a spate of attacks, according to the Daily Record. A shopkeeper in Hamilton told the tabloid it appeared the dog had not “been treated well in the past as he was covered in scars”. Supt Steven Espie said: “This was a distressing incident for those involved. I would like to reassure the local community that this was a contained incident and there is no further risk to the public. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the breed of the dog.”
The government of Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s First Minister repeatedly refused to join Westminster’s XL bully ban despite Michael Gove, the minister for intergovernmental relations, warning them the nation could become a “dumping ground” for the dogs.
But the SNP performed an aboutturn earlier this month, with Mr Yousaf stating that Scotland would “replicate the legislation that is in England and Wales here”.
Jamie Greene, a Scottish Tory MSP, said: “This horrific case fully exposes the recklessness of the SNP’S failure to immediately follow a Uk-wide ban on XL bullies.”
