Labour figures under scrutiny
Party candidates who have a record of anti-israel views
Satvir Kaur
Satvir Kaur is the Labour candidate for Southampton Test, and alleged to have briefly attended a pro-palestine demonstration on Remembrance Sunday last year. Labour sources insisted that Ms Kaur did not take part in the march through the city and that after attending Remembrance Sunday services, she briefly attended a “multi-faith peace vigil” for around 10 minutes before leaving to celebrate Diwali with her family.
Graham Jones
Graham Jones is the former Labour MP for Hyndburn, Lancs, and until last night the party’s candidate for the constituency, but was “administratively suspended” it emerged that he was reportedly present at the meeting where Mr Ali made the offensive comments. Mr Jones himself said that British people who volunteered to fight for the Israeli Defence Forces should be “locked up” and used the phrase “f------ Israel”, in a recording shared by Guido Fawkes.
Zarah Sultana
Zarah Sultana is the Labour MP for Coventry South and has long been outspoken about the conflict in Gaza. She is among the backbenchers who rebelled and voted for an immediate ceasefire in November. Last month, Ms Sultana liked a post on X which accused Israel of “genocidal intent”. She has appeared at pro-gaza rallies, and said at one in October: “Shame on every single person who has given a green light to this assault.”
Afzal Khan
Afzal Khan has been Labour’s MP for Manchester Gorton since 2017. He was a shadow exports minister until he called for a ceasefire in Gaza in November, which meant he had to step down from the shadow front bench. He was a shadow minister under Jeremy Corbyn, whom he described as a “friend”. Mr Khan accused Israel of “genocide” at a 2002 Iraq war rally and in 2014 claimed on Twitter that “the Israeli government are acting like Nazis in Gaza”.
