Trump’s remarks on Haley’s soldier husband ‘disgusting’

- By Laura Murgatroyd

NIKKI HALEY has labelled Donald Trump “disgusting” for questioning the whereabouts of her soldier husband.

“What happened to her husband?” Mr Trump asked the crowd at a rally in Ms Haley’s home state of South Carolina on Saturday. “Where is he? He’s gone,” Mr Trump added.

Ms Haley, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination responded in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“Michael is deployed serving our country, something you know nothing about,” she wrote, adding: “Someone who continually disrespects the sacrifices of military families has no business being commander in chief.”

In an interview with Fox News on Monday, Ms Haley addressed Mr Trump’s comments further, branding him and anyone who believes his comments to be acceptable, “disgusting”.

“The problem with Trump is he’s never been anywhere near a uniform,” Ms Haley said. “The closest he’s come to harm’s way is a golf ball hitting him on a golf cart. What he did is disgusting. And anybody that agrees with it or says it’s OK is disgusting along with him.”

While Maj Haley is currently deployed in the Horn of Africa, he responded to Mr Trump’s remarks on X by posting a meme that reads: “The difference between humans and animals? Animals would never allow the dumbest ones to lead the pack.”

Ms Haley said after an event on Monday afternoon: “This wasn’t a slip of the tongue for Trump. When he goes off his teleprompter, that’s him speaking from the heart. And it’s a pattern.”

She referred to claims by John Kelly, Mr Trump’s former chief of staff, that the former president referred to military members as “suckers” and “losers”.

He is also said to have made disparaging comments to senior staff members while visiting Arlington National Cemetery, saying: “Why should I go to the cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”

Joe Biden also addressed the comments made by Mr Trump.

In a tweet, he said: “The answer is that Major Haley is abroad, serving his country right now.

“We know [Trump] thinks our troops are ‘suckers,’ but this guy wouldn’t know service to his country if it slapped him in the face.”
