TO RUN AT ASCOT.

-

I suggested to him that the appropriate place for him to produce Epinard would be Ascot, even though the horse is entered for the City and Suburban and Coronation Cup at Epsom and the Jubilee Handicap at Kempton Park. He agreed, and reminded me that he had not only entered Epinard in the Gold Cup but also in the Hardwicke Stakes and the All-aged Stakes, while he also intended to put him in the Royal Hunt Cup. In any case, therefore, I think we may count on the pleasure of entertaining this equine celebrity at Ascot (not necessarily in the Gold Cup race) before he goes to America to take on and demolish Zev and all others. Eugène Leigh says that Epinard is the best horse he has had for twenty-nine years, and he is a man of unique experience in America and France. He did not get the horse until June, when he was a two-year-old, prior to which he had shown little promise at Bordeaux. I am sure he feels that Epinard was an awfully unlucky loser of the Cambridgeshire, and that he would have won nine times out of ten, but they just happened to hit the tenth time on this occasion. I found his jockey, Haynes, at the stables on the occasion of my visit to-day, and, notwithstanding reports to the contrary, he will continue to be associated with the horse in his future races this year. One who was also with me during the visit was Frank O’neill, the very popular jockey in France. He is to ride Sir Galahad III. in France, a certain runner and greatly fancied. He was fit to run a fortnight ago, but the present spell of hard weather cannot be helpful to his chances.
