Bridge news

The Northern Ireland Bridge Union holds national online matchpoint pairs events on Thursdays and Sundays, writes Julian Pottage, Bridge Correspond­ent. During February the highest score on these two days of the week was as follows:

Thursday – 70.00% on the 15th achieved by Ronnie Morrow and Sam Jones

Sunday – 67.78% on the 11th achieved by Maureen Murray and Ronnie Morrow

In February the NI teams took place. Winners with a score of 104 out of a possible maximum 140 VPS was the team of Ian Lindsay, Robin Burns, Pat Mcdaid and Zrinka Kokot.

February was also the month for the Senior League Round 7. Winners were Brian Mcdowell, Alan Sharp, Michael and Neill Cauwood with 19.44 VPS.

During the month Jeff Millership, who had been chair of the NIBU and the Irish Bridge Union passed away. He combined a successful and demanding career in Queen’s University with playing and administer­ing bridge.

Service dinners

Plymouth Naval Retired Officers Lt-cdr Pat Hogben presided at a dinner of the Plymouth Naval Retired Officers Associatio­n on the occasion of their annual general meeting, held yesterday evening in the Wardroom, HMS Drake. All present members of the Standing Committee were elected to stand for another year.

The Sandhurst Trust held a reunion dinner at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst last night for officers of Normandy Coy CC 132, serving and retired, to mark the 10th anniversar­y of their commission­ing.

The King has commanded that a Service of Dedication for the Order of the British Empire be held in St Paul’s Cathedral at 11am on Wednesday, May 15 2024.
