A GP who had sex with multiple women at his surgery has been struck off the medical register.

Thomas Plimmer apologised and blamed his actions on a “sex addiction” but a panel ruled his ability to practice was “impaired” and his actions “incompatible” with the medical profession.

The 40-year-old had regularly had sex at the practice in Swindon, Wilts, when he should have been treating NHS patients, the tribunal heard.

The case against the Cambridge-educated doctor was presented by Mark Monaghan, on behalf of the General Medical Council (GMC), who accused him of “manipulating” people with “charms and lies and anything else in your armoury”.

One woman, referred to as Miss A, was a former colleague and claimed the pair had weekly sex meetings between 2018 and 2019, which were “unwanted” and sometimes forced. She said she was “groomed” into regular intercourse and felt used as a “sex object” to relieve his boredom. “Those scars will be there forever – it has completely impacted my life,” she added.

The tribunal also heard that Miss A had received an unsolicited video of Mr Plimmer engaging in sexual intercourse with another woman while at work.

In his defence, Mr Plimmer said he had been working on his addiction and all the encounters were consensual but the panel still found him guilty of misconduct.

Mr Plimmer faced allegations from five other women between 2020 and 2021 and the panel found it proven he had threatened a sixth woman by saying “if that c--- takes me to the GMC I’ll slit her throat. I know where she lives” or words to that effect.

During the hearing, Mr Plimmer blamed many of his actions on a sex addiction.

He said: “Seeking out sexual activity felt like a need, and I did lie in order to get that need met, and I was not honest with people to get that need met.

“But there was no sense of me enjoying this because I like lying, or it gives me power, or it gives me control, they were all by-products of trying to meet my needs.

“I am sincerely apologetic to everyone I’ve lied to...i feel immense shame for everything I did.”
