CANINES IN CARS
Thank you for the article by the highly respected David Tomlinson about transporting dogs [Sporting dog, May issue]. However, I am afraid he misses the essential risks. An unrestrained pet is at the same risk as a human in a motor vehicle and the Highway Code is quite clear: “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”
Breaking the Highway
Code could result in you being prosecuted for driving without due care and attention, which “can result in a maximum fine of £2,500 and nine penalty points – and if an unrestrained pet has caused an accident, insurers are unlikely to pay out”. I believe it is not only our responsibility to behave legally but to treat our pets, ourselves and other road users with respect.
