Andy’s a Butler, plumber and ref

-

WALSALL captain Andy Butler would appear to be the perfect player to plug any leaks at the heart of the Saddlers’ defence.

As well as training to be a referee, Butler is also looking to become qualified as a plumber so he has plenty of options when he hangs up his boots in a few years’ time.

He said:“I passed my level two plumbing last year but it is difficult to fit everything in at the moment.

“I am still refereeing and I have to take 20 games to progress to a higher level.

“I am following in the footsteps of Steve Baines, another former Walsall player who become a Football League referee.

“It would be nice to make real progress as the top referees now make a good living from the game.

“I’m hoping that being a professional footballer will help me progress as there is a move afoot to try and get former players to take up refereeing.”

Butler, left, also has to find time to get to Walsall as he travels daily from the Doncaster area.
