Sannino defiant on his future

- By Michael Perkin

BEPPE SANNINO was in defiant mood after tenman Watford beat Huddersfield, insisting he is happy at Vicarage Road despite reports his job is under threat.

The Hornets lost Gabriel Tamas to a red card in the second half but goals from Troy Deeney, substitute Keith Andrews and two from Almen Abdi were enough to grab the points.

And Sannino wants to see the Hornets play his way.

“I have not asked the club about the situation because I don’t think I need to,” Sannino said. “I work always, this is my job and I love Watford and everything here.

“I am the manager at Watford and I am happy with the result but I don’t know about my position in the club.

“We have to be happy because we won the game. This is my mentality and my way.

“The teams I manage have my mentality to win the game and I am very happy because for the first 30 minutes I was watching a team I want to watch every game.

“We have had good performances in the past, but this performance was my [best] performance. Not for quality but for passion and feeling.”

Watford had the ball in the net after just ten minutes, only for Fernando Forestieri’s low effort to be ruled out for offside.

But they took the lead on 15 minutes as Czech Republic international Daniel Pudil put Deeney through and the Watford skipper finished well.

It was Huddersfield’s turn to be denied by the offside flag on 28 minutes when Vaughan prodded in after Conor Coady’s long-range effort was parried by Heurelho Gomes.

And the visitors had the Brazilian goalkeeper to thank as they levelled just after the break when he pushed Sean Scannell’s low shot straight into the path of Harry Bunn who drilled home the rebound.

They were only level for five minutes as the ball broke for Adbi who calmly slotted the ball beyond Terriers keeper Alex Smithies.

Huddersfield refused to lie down though and made it 2-2 midway through the second half when Murray Wallace headed in from Jacob Butterfield’s corner.

Moments later Watford were a man down as Tamas was given his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card.

But that did not stop them taking the lead when Abdi’s corner was met with a stunning header into the roof of the net from substitute Andrews, before Abdi rounded off the scoring with smart finish after Watford broke away with Huddersfield chasing a third equaliser.

Terriers caretaker boss Mark Lillis admitted he hoped a new manager would soon be in place.

He said: “Who knows what tomorrow brings? I would be happy to see a manager come in because as a club we need that.

“It’s a massive disappointment as we came here with a game plan.

“We were magnificent against a top team that will do well this season.

“We came back and showed character. It was a great game with 22 guys having a right go to get a result. I really enjoyed it.

“But the Championship is cruel and you pay for your mistakes.

“We’re leaking goals and we could do with an older leader at the back. Young players are fantastic to work with but they’ve got to learn quicker.”
