HAWK’S FLYING HIGH AT UNITED
TERRY HAWKRIDGE says he still can’t quite believe he is playing in League One.
The Scunthorpe midfielder was a late teen turning out in Sunday morning pub football, but subsequently forced his way up the pyramid and is now mixing it with the likes of Sheffield United.
The 24-year-old was signed as a semi-pro by Huccknall in 2008, but was soon freed to join Carlton Town in the Evo-Stik Division One South – English football’s eighth tier.
In August 2012, the winger moved to Conference North Gainsborough Trinity, where he appeared in 37 league matches, scoring six times, before earning a switch to the Iron last summer.
“I never expected any of this although it was something I always wanted to do," said Hawkridge, who helped United to promotion last term.
“It has all happened so quickly and I am still learning each day. I know I have to keep working and we have a lot of experienced players who will help me do that.
“The more help I get the better player I become. I just have to keep my head down and keep training and performing. Scunthorpe is a great place to be at the moment.”
Hawkridge knows he still has plenty of work to do to earn a regular starting place.
He added:“If I keep working hard I will get better. We have a great squad here so even if I am on the bench for a few games I’ll keep training hard and knocking on the door.”
