York grab unwanted piece of history

-

YORK became the first team in 13 years to draw their opening five games of the league season, and boss Nigel Worthington again called on his side to be more ruthless in front of goal.

It is only the eighth time in league history that a team has drawn their first five, with York again failing to take advantage of some hefty spells in possession.

And although Worthington was once again impressed with his side’s general performance, he believes they must start to take their chances if they are to claim their first win of the season.

“I couldn’t fault the performance, as there was a lot of energy and some good stuff,”Worthington said.“The decision making could be better but that’s all part of our education. After that it was the same story once again – and we’ve not taken our chances.

“We’re creating chances and there is good energy from the team.We need to be ruthless in front of goal and that’s something we will continue to work on.

“We’ve got to keep the belief and then the goals will come.

“We’ve got to be set for these situations and try go and force getting the three points.”

In truth, the game was a real lacklustre affair between two sides who had only lost one game between them so far this year – with very little to write home about in the first-half. By Aaron Bower

The action intensified somewhat in the second half as both teams tried to chance their arm a little more. Jake Hyde was guilty of wasting a great chance for the home side, prodding wide after Michael Coulson had forced a great save from Matt Ingram in the Wycombe goal.

The best chance came for the visitors though; the lively Paris Cowan-Hall provided an inch-perfect cross for Steven Craig under pressure, but he scuffed his shot straight at Michael Ingham when through on goal.

It finished 00, and although Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was pleased with a point to round off a great first month for his side, he pulled no punches afterwards about the quality of play on show. “It was a horrible game of football,” Ainsworth said.“They’re very direct, but we countered everything they threw at us. I thought we managed the game better than York, and we got a deserved cleansheet.

“I think if people look at the result they’ll say it’s great to get a point away at York - and I’m looking at it like that too.

“After the first month of the season we’re sitting fifth in the table, so long may that continue. I’m proud of what everyone at Wycombe has achieved so far, but I'll bring us back down to Earth on Monday.”
