Welsh relies on the direct approach

-

WHILE agents make one last scramble to find their players clubs this summer, Andy Welsh has taken the unusual approach of flying solo to find his new home.

The former Sunderland winger was released by Scunthorpe United in May, and decided to go without an agent and use contacts gathered from his 13-year playing career to seek out opportunities instead.

“I haven’t worked with an agent properly for a number of years and Brian Laws called me directly to do a deal with Scunthorpe last year, so what’s the point in getting someone else involved?” said Welsh.

“People say you need agents in the game and you do to a certain extent but, when clubs come to you directly, there’s no point.

“I’m not talking bad about agents. For the situation I was in, I didn’t see the need to use one – maybe it was a good thing at the time but maybe it’s hindering me now.”

Although he’s still to find a club for this season, Welsh has made some headway and went on trial at former club Yeovil Town, while keeping fit by training with NonLeaguers Stalybridge Celtic.

But despite impressing Glovers boss Gary Johnson during his time at Huish Park, Welsh could not agree a deal.

He remains optimistic, adding: “Gary Johnson said that if any club wants to call him up and ask about how I’ve done or what I’m like as a lad that will be OK.”
