Shrimpers blown away by Blues

WYCOMBE’S 12th league win of the season was also their best according to Gareth Ainsworth after he saw his side thump four past fellow promotion candidates Southend.

Jack Payne had given the visitors the lead early on, but goals from Paris Cowan-Hall and Matt McClure turned the game on its head.

Southend’s Jerome BinnomWill­iams was given his marching orders after 60 minutes for a hefty challenge on Josh Scowen before Joe Jacobson and McClure’s second rubbed it in late on to cap off the win.

The victory keeps free-scoring Wycombe top of League Two and made it three wins in a row for the Chairboys who have also netted 11 times during the run.

Southend started the day with three consecutiv­e wins of their own, but were blown away by a Wycombe side who continue to impress.

“It’s our joint biggest win and maybe that’s the performanc­e of the season for me,” said Ainsworth.

“Southend came here with a fantastic manager in Phil Brown and with a big team and budget who were one of the favourites for the league this year.

“But we were deserved winners. Of course the sending off had an impact but anyone who was here knows we were the stronger team.
