The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Jamie Holt

CARLISLE United have Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley to thank for the addition of two exciting young talents.

Magpies duo Macaulay Gillesphey and Alex Gilliead have joined the Cumbrians on loan for a month.

And defender Gillesphey, 19, says Newcastle Under-21s boss Beardsley, who started his career at Carlisle before going on to make over 300 appearances for the Magpies, played a huge role.

“Peter Beardsley said it would be a great opportunity for us to come out and get some first-team football,” said Gillesphey. “It’s a good challenge and we’re at a stage where we need that.

“We’ll get some first-team experience instead of playing Under-21 football. It will be a challenge, because it will be more physical at League Two level.”

Gilliead has been capped for England at Under-18 and Under-20 level and the 19year-old is also keen to make his mark with Carlisle.

“I’m over the moon to be here,” said the striker. “I’ve played Under-21 football for three seasons, but I need to be out and playing men’s football now so it’s a great opportunity.”
