SHOLA’S GAME IS IN SLOW MOTION
WOLVES are a fast, dynamic, counterattacking side. So well done to Kenny Jackett for shelving plans to sign Shola Ameobi.
The 33-year-old spent last week on trial at Molineux and those who watched his performances for the Under-21s tell of a player about ten yards off the pace.
This could, of course, be the result of three months’ unemployment following his release by Crystal Palace. But, having watched Ameobi many times for Newcastle over the last decade, I’d argue it’s his default setting.
Even in the flush of youth, the striker was infuriatingly ponderous. Now, slower and heavier, he looks like a man playing the game in slow motion.
Ask anyone who’s worked with Ameobi and they’ll attest to his talent, trotting out the classic ‘you should see him in training’ line. But, at no point over the last 14 years, has he ever bothered proving it to the rest of us.
And, when you can’t even impress behind closed doors any more, it’s probably time to call it a day.
