Rejected by university, Jonny Giles has finally enrolled at Oxford Uni...ted!
THEY say every cloud has a silver lining and Portsmouth first team coach Ian Foster now understands the phrase a little better after Jayden Stockley’s winning goal.
Stockley expected to be among the Pompey substitutes and was only promoted to the starting line-up when Adam McGurk suffered an ankle injury in the warm-up.
But the striker made the most of his chance and capped a strong performance by stretching to volley home a 71st-minute cross from Ben Davies.
It gave Portsmouth a deserved win, which took them top of League Two.
Manager Paul Cook did not attend the post-match press conference so it was left to Foster to explain the late team change.
He said: “Adam rolled an ankle during a possession game in the warm-up and it has swollen up, so he is leaving with a boot on to protect it and walking with crutches.
“It was very unfortunate for him because he has worked hard and was in good form.
“But Jayden only lost his place because he had a weekend off when his partner gave birth to a baby, so it was not through any fault of his.
“Football can be a funny old game and sometimes opportunities come when you least expect them.
