LETHAL LEE ON FIRE TO TOPPLE PILGRIMS

- By Sheridan Robins

RED-HOT Lee Gregory scored four of Millwall’s five goals as they booked their place in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area semi-finals with a thrilling 5-3 win at Plymouth.

Aiden O’Brien also netted for the Lions with Jake Jervis (two) and Graham Carey on target for the Pilgrims.

Oxford United struck early in each half to defeat Dagenham & Redbridge. Patrick Hoban was on target after just 30 seconds and Alex McDonald scored two minutes into the second half.

Southend United edged out League Two side Bristol Rovers 1-0 thanks to a firsthalf John White finish.

However, there was some joy in the West Country as Yeovil Town left their league woes behind and triumphed 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw with Gillingham.

Harry Cornick opened the scoring for the League Two strugglers but Bradley Garmston hit a stunning effort just before the break to level the tie and take it to spot-kicks.

In the Northern section, Wigan thrashed Blackpool 4-0. Two Jordy Hiwula goals either side of finishes from Sean Murray and Yanic Wildschut ensured an easy victory.

Morecambe saw off a third successive League One side as they travelled to Rochdale and triumphed 1-0 thanks to Paul Mullin’s first-half strike.

After their FA Cup exit at Altrincham, Barnsley needed a boost – and they got it with a come-from-behind victory against York City.

Michael Coulson gave the Minstermen the lead just before the break only for Ben Pearson to pull the Tykes level. Adam Hammill scored a brilliant late winner to ease the pressure on under-fire Barnsley boss Lee Johnson.

A goalless draw at Highbury between Fleetwood and Sheffield United ended with Fleetwood keeper Chris Maxwell saving two penalties in the deciding shoot-out as the Cod Army won 4-1.

Area semi-final draw – North: Fleetwood v Morecambe, Wigan v Barnsley. South: Oxford v Yeovil, Southend v Millwall. Ties to be played w/c December 7.
