UNITED IN BID TO KEEP GILBEY

- By Pippa Field

COLCHESTER United have offered Alex Gilbey a new contract in an effort to dissuade Bristol City from continuing their pursuit of the midfielder.

The Robins have had two bids for Gilbey rejected, the first of which U’s boss Kevin Keen labelled “a joke”.

And, desperate to hang on to their 21-year-old prodigy, Keen has revealed the club have offered Gilbey an improved deal.

“We’ve spoken to Alex and his representatives and made it clear we really want him to stay,” said Keen. “He’s been given another offer of a new contract.

“We’re desperate to keep him and we think so much of him but, at the same time, we want players to better themselves and go on. In my eyes, he can be a Premier League player.”
