BEN WAS RIGHT TO GO POSH!

- By Nick Lough

MOVING away from Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur is one of the best things Ben Alnwick says he has ever done in football, and now he feels he’s getting the game time he deserves at Peterborough.

Contracted to the London club from 2007 to 2012, Alnwick had no less than seven loan spells while with Spurs.

Now settled with the Posh after time with Barnsley, Charlton and Leyton Orient, Alnwick is enjoying his football again after struggling to cope with irregular game time.

“I don’t think the loan moves were great for me, moving around month to month and getting dribs and drabs of games,” he told The Football League Paper.

“As a goalkeeper you need a good run. Luckily I got the opportunity to come here and I’m just enjoying playing every week.

“It’s what I’ve been needing and I should have been doing it from a younger age, but when you get tied down to a big club like Tottenham, it’s hard to get out.

“I don’t know what it is about Peterborough, but it’s a well run club playing the right way.”

The Posh have conceded more goals than any other side in the top half of the League One, but have far and away out-scored the rest of the division.

With talisman Conor Washington having left for QPR, Alnwick is confident his replacement can step up to the plate.

Entertainment

“Nowadays, we play a much more open game and for all its brilliant entertainment for the punters and neutrals, for me sometimes we do get left a bit open,” he said.

“We’ve got new signings like Shaquille Coulthirst, Adil Nabi and Harry Toffolo and we just need to give them time to settle in.

“I’ve seen the lads in training and I can already tell you they’re going to be top players.

“Conor was absolutely fantastic for us, but I still think there’s more to come from the squad we have.

“Promotion is what I and the lads want and then we’ll see where it takes us, but once we get into the Championship we’ll go on another run in there.”
